Should We Take a Chance on the Housing First Approach

According to the United Nations, about 1.6 billion people around the world live in inadequate housing (Ojiambo). That is one-fifth of the world’s population that is living without a place to call home. Homelessness is a global issue that plagues every nation, including the United States. However, the success of a few nations in addressing this issue, gives us a glimmer of hope, that the same can be done here in the United States. In tackling this crisis, the US can…

According to the United Nations, about 1.6 billion people around the world live in inadequate housing. That is one fifth of the world’s population that is living without a place to call home. Homelessness is a global issue that plagues every nation, including the United states. Even some of the most affluent cities in America have difficulty addressing the increase in homelessness over the past few years, including my hometown of Irvine California. Like many cities in America, Irvine has criminalized homelessness, all while providing no shelters or housing facilities. Irvine’s method of dealing with the homeless has raised ethical…

Growing up in a large city, I regularly saw homeless people on corner streets holding up signs that read, “I’m Hungry” or “Anything Will Help.” After I moved to Irvine California a few years ago, I noticed something strange; there were absolutely no homeless people. Despite Irvine having the third largest homeless population in all of Orange County, I have yet to come across a single homeless person. How is that possible, you may ask? Some cities in Orange County, Irvine included, are notorious for shipping off all of their homeless people to neighboring cities. Not only that, but numerous…

After I moved to my current hometown a few years ago, I noticed something strange; there were absolutely no homeless people. Despite Irvine having the third largest homeless population in all of Orange County, I have yet to come across a single homeless person after having lived here for many years. This is because the homeless in Irvine are constantly shipped off to neighboring cities. Not only that, but the city of Irvine does not have a single designated shelter to house the homeless. Not only is this treatment of homeless people unethical, but Irvine and other Orange County cities’…

The Spanish hit show La Casa de Papel, or otherwise known as Money Heist, has recently taken the American TV show scene by storm. This show has gained popularity not only in America, but throughout the world, and currently holds Netflix’s record for the most viewed non-english show. Money Heist is an exhilarating show based on a group of criminal misfits who carry out some of the most intricate heists. Led by a criminal mastermind referred to as “El Professor,” the skilled group of robbers face many difficulties throughout their heist attempts, and overcome many of the obstacles set by…

There are many scenes in Money Heist that convey how figures of authority will often do unethical things to get the upper hand, further fueling the American audiences’ distrust of those in power. In one of the most powerful scenes of the show, one of the robbers nicknamed Nairobi, nearly dies when the Spanish Police use her son to lure her out into the open and shoot her. Nairobi, believing that this was the police’s honest attempt at negotiating, is betrayed and nearly loses her life as a result. Similar to how Nairobi was blindsided by the Spanish police’s true…

Ancillary 4

The cultural object I chose to write my essay about is the show La Casa de Papel, more commonly referred to as Money Heist. Money Heist is a popular Spanish show about a group of criminals who plan and carry out some of the most intricate heists. This show has gained popularity not only in America, but throughout the world, breaking Netflix’s record of the most viewed show in the process. I believe this show was able to gain traction in America because Americans value the underdog story and the idea that one can transcend in society. …

How We Can Do More By Doing Less

Many historians and philosophers have indicated that the world today is a glimpse into what a fully globalized world could be. This may fill those who value the benefits of globalization with optimism and hope for all that humans will accomplish together in the future. However, it is difficult for me, and anyone who analyzes the greater effects of globalization from a non-western viewpoint to adhere to a global identity. The global institutions present today are flawed, and often give those who favor a global unification a false sense of reality, and…
